When Should Men Get Tested for Low Testosterone?

As men get older, routine health screenings and blood work become increasingly important. Regular lab testing can help identify potential health concerns early, often before symptoms become severe.

One condition that blood testing can reveal is low testosterone, also known as testosterone deficiency. Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, but some men experience a more significant drop that can affect their quality of life. Common symptoms include reduced energy, decreased muscle mass and strength, lower sex drive, difficulty concentrating, mood changes, and a general feeling that something just isn't quite right.

So, when should men have their testosterone levels checked?

Rather than relying on age alone, testing is typically recommended when symptoms of low testosterone begin to appear. Men who notice persistent fatigue, a decline in libido, difficulty building or maintaining muscle, increased body fat, or changes in mood may benefit from a comprehensive hormone evaluation. While symptoms can occur at any age, guys may begin to notice changes in their 40s and beyond.

For Thunderbird Men’s Health Medical Director, Dr. Jordan Glenn, it was like “falling off a cliff.”

“Personally, it was around my 40th birthday; it was like falling off a cliff. It was just time. I went to my doctor, and was like: ‘This is what’s happening to me. It’s got to be something.’ We did a panel of labs, and sure enough, the testosterone was low,” he said.

In addition to regular visits with a primary care provider, they should bring up concerning symptoms with a healthcare professional who can determine whether hormone testing is appropriate. They should ask their doctor to add a testosterone panel to their regular labs – or we can test it for them.

At Thunderbird Men's Health, we specialize in testosterone optimization and men's hormone health. Every treatment plan begins with a comprehensive evaluation, including laboratory testing and a detailed review of symptoms, medical history, and health goals. If treatment is appropriate, we develop a personalized plan designed to help patients restore healthy testosterone levels, improve their symptoms, and support long-term wellness.

If you've noticed a decline in your energy, performance, or overall sense of well-being, testosterone testing may be an important first step toward feeling like yourself again.
